                                                          Joyce Quinlan Estes

                                                               1943  -   2016

Joyce Estes, age 72, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, after suffering a stroke, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was the second of twin girls born to Sherman W. and Hyral B. Quinlan on July 13, 1943, in Sacramento, California.

Joyce’s father worked in construction building roads in Northern California. The family moved many times, eventually settling in Napa County in June 1945.

She started her education in a rural two-room schoolhouse in American Canyon, graduating from Napa Union High School in 1961. Joyce loved school and rarely missed a day. She continued her quest for knowledge at night school, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Cal State Hayward in 1976, and a Master of Business Administration from Golden Gate University on June 2, 1984.

Joyce and John met the summer of 1960 and married three years later. After their daughter Debbie was born, many happy weekends were spent boating and skiing at Lake Berryessa. Joyce swam the width of Lake Berryessa three times with her daughter and sister, and even did the Bay-to-Breakers as a centipede. She and John would have been married 53 years on April 7th.

She always worked in accounting, first at Albert’s Department Store in Napa, then at Benicia Arsenal, and after her marriage, at the Veterans.Adminstration in San Francisco.

Joyce began her CPA residence requirements in 1978 with Pearson, Del Prete & Co. in Redwood City and received her CPA license on May 30, 1980. In 2001 she left the firm and opened her own limited practice in Vallejo, slowly moving into retirement.

In 1987, Joyce received the Athena Award as the outstanding business woman of the year. She was also a member and past president of the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance. She was a member of the Vineyard Trails Napa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for 40 years, and was eligible for membership in the Mayflower Society. In her youth, she was also active in the American Canyon 4-H Club, winning many awards and attaining a Silver Star.

She loved gardening, flower arranging, cruises and entertaining friends. Joyce will be remembered for her joyful and committed energy to the residents of Hiddenbrooke. She was the founding President of the Hiddenbrooke Communiity Association in Vallejo, and worked tirelessly for over 13 years toward the beautification of the community.

In addition to her husband John, she is survived by her twin sister, Sharon (Max) Sanders and daughter Marcelline Sanders of Napa; sister-in-law Rosemarie Quinlan and son Aron Quinlan of Napa, daughters Kelly (Phil) Charnas and daughters Alexandra and Christina of San Mateo, and Stephanie (Chris) Fidler of Petaluma.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents, her daughter, Debra Lynn Estes in 1994, and her brother, Dennis Dean Quinlan in 2012.  She will be missed by her beloved pets, Jack, Lucy and Kitty Cat.

A service to honor her life was held Monday, April 11, at 12:00 p.m. at the Tulocay Chapel, 411 Coombsville Road, Napa. Burial was at Tulocay Cemetary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of the North Bay. Memories and words of sympathy may be shared with the family on-line at www.tulocaycemetery.org
